How to Clean Your Leather Handbag
A leather purse can last a long time if you take proper care of it. By regularly removing dirt, grime, and oil from your purse, you can extend the life of the leather and keep it looking like new. Here are some tips to follow.
Before you get started, check the tag on your leather purse for cleaning instructions. If anything on the tag contradicts the advice in this article, follow the instructions on the tag.
Begin by removing everything from your handbag. Open all the compartments, turn it upside down, and shake it to remove any dirt and debris. Wipe the interior with a soft, dry cloth.
Mix a few drops of a mild liquid facial or body soap, such as Dove or Neutrogena, with two cups of distilled water until suds form. Dip a sponge or soft rag into the water and then wring it out thoroughly so that it is barely wet. Use the rag or sponge to wipe the outside of the purse, then dry and buff it with a towel. Use a leather protector or conditioner to treat the surface according to the instructions with the product.
If you need to remove a stain, you will have to use a different method depending on the type.
Always test these methods on an inconspicuous area first.
- To remove an ink stain, dip a cotton swab in isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and rub it over the stain. Use a blow dryer on the lowest setting to dry it.
- For a dark stain, mix one part cream of tartar and one part lemon juice to make a paste. Rub it on the stain, leave it on for 10 minutes, and then follow the instructions above for general cleaning to remove it. Buff the handbag dry using a soft cloth or towel.
- If there is a grease stain on your leather handbag, simply use a dry cloth to wipe it away. Do not use water.
Follow these everyday care tips to keep your leather purse in good condition:
- Never place it in direct sunlight because this can cause the leather to dry out, fade, and crack.
- If you use a sponge to clean your leather handbag, use a natural, non-colored one.
- Do not expose your leather handbag to excess moisture or water that can damage it.
- Do not use any harsh or abrasive cleaners that can damage the surface of your handbag.
- Never use any type of oil, polish, or product containing waxes or silicone because they can damage the leather and make it feel sticky.
- Do not use saddle soap, alcohol, varnish, ammonia-based cleaners, or bleach because they can cause damage and discoloration.
- You can replenish and recondition your leather handbag by mixing one part distilled white vinegar and two parts linseed oil. Shake it well and then apply it in a circular motion. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then buff once or twice with a soft cloth.
- Never use baby wipes or another alkaline cleaner because they can damage the leather’s finish.
- If you have any questions about how to clean your leather handbag, take it to a professional who specializes in cleaning leather.
